Allesia I just watched your documentary on Netflix. Wow, you are an amazing woman and inspiration. My heart goes out to you and the freediving community for the loss of Steve.
I myself am scared of open water but may be brave and take a few more steps now I have seen what you can do.
Take care and keep going deeper. Xx

You cant dive with Swim goggles, right?

No way to relieve the Pressure building on the Eyes via your Nose.
I think this should be cleared up, before people buy these for Apnea diving

Italian freediver Alessia Zecchini is one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of competitive freediving. Known as "The Deepest Woman on Earth," she has broken multiple world records, won international titles, and inspired athletes around the world through her achievements beneath the surface.

Her story reached millions through the Netflix documentary The Deepest Breath, which follows her pursuit of world records while exploring the remarkable friendship between Alessia and legendary safety diver Stephen Keenan. While her accomplishments have earned worldwide recognition, Alessia says her greatest motivation has never been breaking records. Instead, it's her lifelong love for the ocean and the sense of freedom she experiences every time she dives.

In this exclusive interview, Alessia shares how she discovered freediving, the training behind her success, the mindset required to perform at the highest level, and the lessons she's learned throughout one of the most remarkable careers in the sport.

Who Is Alessia Zecchini?

Alessia Zecchini is an Italian professional freediver widely regarded as one of the greatest female freedivers of all time. Throughout her career, she has broken numerous world records across multiple freediving disciplines while representing Italy in international competitions.

Beyond her competitive success, Alessia became internationally recognized through the Netflix documentary The Deepest Breath, which tells the story of her pursuit of world records and her friendship with Irish safety diver Stephen Keenan. Her journey has introduced millions of people to freediving and inspired many athletes to explore the sport.

Although she has achieved extraordinary success, Alessia continues to describe herself as someone motivated by curiosity, discipline, and a deep love for the ocean rather than the pursuit of records alone.

Career Highlights

Throughout her career, Alessia has:

  • Broken multiple freediving world records across several disciplines.
  • Won medals at national and international competitions.
  • Starred in Netflix's The Deepest Breath.
  • Inspired a new generation of freedivers through her achievements and passion for ocean exploration.

Discovering a Passion for Freediving

When did you start freediving, and was it love at first sight?

"Since I was so small, I just loved to be in the water—it was my world. I really hate to swim on the surface, but when I discovered this world under the water, I just really fell in love."

Alessia's connection with the ocean began at an early age. Family holidays introduced her to the sea, but by the age of 11, she realized that freediving was far more than a hobby. Two years later, she already knew exactly what she wanted to do.

"When I was 13, I immediately understood. In a text at school where my teacher asked what I wanted to do when I became an adult, I wrote: I want to become a professional freediver."

Her parents quickly realized her dream extended beyond recreational swimming.

"My main goal was to dive deeper and deeper because I love to be in the sea."

More than two decades later, that feeling hasn't changed.

"It's unbelievable. I still want to discover what's inside the cave, or just look at the blue and enjoy it because I love the blue so much."

Chasing World Records While Enjoying the Journey

You started competing in the pool at just 13 years old before moving into open-water freediving, eventually breaking numerous world records. What keeps you motivated?

For Alessia, world records have never been the ultimate goal. Instead, they represent the outcome of years of disciplined training and a genuine passion for freediving.

"I need goals for training, and I love to train every day—I need to. I am an athlete, so I love to train. The records are just the goal that I need to have for the effort of training every day."

While competitive success has shaped her career, some of her most memorable experiences have happened far away from the podium.

"We are in the most beautiful places in the world, so it's not about records. The records are just the consequence of our training because we need goals. For me, the most exciting thing is to dive with dolphins, whales, and sea lions. That is the most beautiful thing I have ever done in my life."

How Alessia Trains for Elite Freediving

What does your training look like throughout the year?

Preparing for world-record attempts requires a careful balance of strength, endurance, technique, and recovery. Alessia adjusts her routine throughout the season, beginning with a strong physical foundation before gradually shifting her focus toward technical performance as competitions approach.

During her preparation period, Alessia typically focuses on:

  • Strength and endurance training in the gym alongside regular pool sessions to improve fitness, breath control, and overall performance.
  • Aerobic conditioning through activities such as cycling, rollerblading, and occasional climbing before transitioning to more technical, competition-focused training.

She also relies on comfortable equipment that allows her to focus completely on training.

"I use THEMAGIC5 goggles in the pool. They really are super, super useful. I love the view and they really are so comfortable. If one day I compete again in the pool, I will use them."

As competition approaches, her priorities begin to change.

"When I arrive close to the specific preparation, I start to do a bit less quantity and more quality in the training, always with the same goals."

Recovery also becomes increasingly important during competition season.

"When I am in the place of competition, I just do one day of diving and then one or two days off. On the day off, I still go to the gym because during our dives we are losing a lot of muscles, so it's important."

Learning Never Stops

You've been freediving for your entire teenage and adult life. What's something you're still working on?

Despite spending most of her life in the sport, Alessia believes there is always something new to learn. One of the biggest lessons throughout her career has been understanding the importance of balance.

"The years before I understood how important it was to rest, but I'm learning year by year still. Seventeen years, and I'm still learning a lot."

Finding the right balance between training and recovery has become just as important as physical preparation.

"I'm trying to find the good balance that I can bring after the water because it's super important for freediving that you have a really good state of mind."

Recovering From Injury and Refining Technique

What technical skills are you focusing on this year?

Like many elite athletes, Alessia continues to refine every aspect of her performance while managing the physical demands of high-level competition.

After multiple arm injuries and surgeries over the past several years, rebuilding strength has become one of her priorities.

"I'm trying to build a bit more strength in one discipline because I have had several injuries on my arms in the past six years and surgeries and everything."

She has also dedicated significant time to improving equalization and the technical precision of every dive.

"In the past three years with my coach, we really worked a lot to build the dive. Now everything is quite perfect, so I just have to repeat the feeling that I lived last year because it was just amazing."

Working through every small detail has helped her become more consistent and relaxed underwater.

"I was focusing on every little detail during the dive, so I built a step-by-step rule, and it worked super well."

The Mindset Behind World Records

A freediver's mindset is often considered just as important as physical ability. How has yours changed over the years?

As Alessia began attempting deeper dives, she discovered that success depended just as much on mental preparation as physical training.

"At the beginning my limit was quite far away. If my mind was not at one hundred percent and if I was a bit afraid or stressed, it was not such a big problem."

Today, the margin for error is much smaller.

"Now everything has to be perfect. No thoughts, no bad emotions, and no good emotions. You have to not feel anything."

Before every dive, she follows a simple routine that helps her stay fully present.

"I can arrive at the platform in the flow. I don't have to think about anything else, just feel the water, look at the sea, look at the little waves, and calm myself."

Once the dive begins, her focus narrows to a single moment.

"The only thing that I'm thinking about is just what I'm doing in that moment. You are living the present without paying attention to anything that's happening around you."

For Alessia, the ocean itself plays an important role in achieving that state of mind.

"The sea around me helps me a lot. In a little way, it's like hypnotizing yourself."

The Story Behind The Deepest Breath

Your journey to break the world record and your relationship with safety diver Stephen Keenan became the focus of Netflix's The Deepest Breath. How did the documentary come about, and how do you feel about it today?

While the documentary introduced Alessia's story to millions of viewers, she says there was only one reason she agreed to participate.

"I accepted to do the film only because my goal was that Stephen had to be remembered. He was too special to be forgotten."

The documentary took nearly five years to complete, but seeing the response from audiences around the world made the experience worthwhile.

"Now that it's out, I feel the goal was reached. Everybody loves Steve, and the result was good."

Stephen Keenan was much more than a safety diver. For Alessia, he became someone who changed her life forever.

"Stephen helped me so much. He saved my life twice. I was so lucky to meet him."

His legacy continues to inspire not only Alessia but also countless people who discovered freediving through The Deepest Breath.

Inspiring the Next Generation

What are you most proud of as a freediver?

Despite breaking world records throughout her career, Alessia says her proudest achievement isn't measured by depth or medals.

Instead, it's seeing young people discover freediving and develop a love for the ocean.

"So many young people are starting to freedive, and their parents allow them to do it."

She admits she initially worried how the documentary would influence public perception of the sport, but those concerns quickly disappeared.

"I received so many messages from kids saying they want to become like me, they love the ocean, and they started taking a course."

For Alessia, hearing that her story has encouraged others to follow their passion has become one of the most meaningful rewards of her career.

"People say, 'Thank you. You changed my life. You changed the way I think about my life.' That's something incredible, and I'm really proud of it."

Finding Peace Beneath the Surface

Have you ever been afraid of the water?

Considering the extraordinary depths she explores, many people assume fear must be a constant companion. For Alessia, however, the ocean has always represented something very different.

"Everything is perfect in the water. It's the place where I saved myself."

She explains that the only fear she's ever experienced comes from making mistakes, not from the ocean itself.

"I'm not afraid of the ocean because it's the thing that I love most. I don't think you can be afraid of something that you truly love."

That deep connection with the sea continues to shape both her career and her outlook on life.

Looking Ahead

What is your goal this season?

Although Alessia has already achieved more than most athletes could ever imagine, her goals remain focused on the process rather than the outcome.

"To enjoy every single dive like I did last year and to have discipline. To know exactly what I have to do in every second of my dive and to have one hundred percent control."

When asked to describe freediving in only three words, her answer perfectly reflects everything she shared throughout the interview.

"Wonderful. Peaceful. Freedom."
