Wat een keune actie. Ik doe mee voor mijn dochter die het zo verdiend. Met haar S14 beperking valt het niet mee om mee te draaien in deze harder wordende maatschappij. Ook bij het zwemmen valt ze bij de prijzen vaak buiten de boot, zelfs op Provinciale Kampioenschappen omdat er daar bjj de parazwemmers all inn wordt gezwommen en ook op leeftijd geen onderscheid wordt gemaakt. Toch heeft ze zoveel plezier in het zwemmen dat ik haar deze mooie prijs gun.

“I’m a Dutch swimmer, I specialize in backstroke and freestyle, and I’ve competed in three Olympic Games—that’s me,” Kira Toussaint says with a smile. Raised in the Netherlands and made the national team at just 13, Kira grew up immersed in the sport. Her mother is an Olympic gold medalist in the 200m backstroke and her father a wetsuit designer, but it wasn’t family pressure that propelled her—she says backstroke “chose her.” After moving to the U.S. to combine education and elite training—first in Florida, then at the University of Tennessee—she became an All-American and qualified for her first Olympics in Rio 2016. A degree in kinesiology sharpened her understanding of performance, and her breakthrough followed: two more Olympic campaigns, multiple national and European records, and a short-course world record in the 50m backstroke. Across 11 world championships and 54 international medals, she built a resume defined by longevity and precision.

Kira’s rise wasn’t just pool work; it was a mindset. She embraced a science- and tech-forward approach—tracking sleep, testing lactate, optimizing recovery, and even refining social habits—all to carve out marginal gains. “I figured out early on that there was more to swimming than actual swimming,” she says. Even her pre-race ritual reflects that focus: cleaning the backstroke bar to ensure “no drops!”—a small, personal habit that keeps her mind clear on the start.
