"Cool, freshies."
Last weekend, I was spending time with Hayden Wilde when I handed him two new pairs of goggles. He looked down, smiled, and said, "Cool, freshies." I'd heard the expression before, but in that moment it stuck with me.
Freshies. No explanation needed. Every swimmer knows exactly what that means. A brand-new pair of goggles. Crystal-clear lenses. A perfect seal. Fresh straps. No scratches. No fogging. No surprises.
Just freshies.

A universal feeling
The more I thought about it, the more I realized how universal the term is. Whether you're an Olympian, a Masters swimmer, a weekend triathlete, or a kid heading to morning practice, swimmers everywhere understand the feeling. I train often in open-water, and the pool, but I always save a brand-new pair for race day. That moment when everything needs to feel dialed in, simple, and certain.
EVERY SPORT HAS ITS RITUALS
Golfers save a new glove for tournament day. Cyclists obsess over fresh tires before a big race. Runners carefully choose the shoes they'll wear on race morning.
Swimmers have freshies.
Saved for the moments that matter
For many of us, freshies are reserved for the moments that matter most. The championship meet. The open-water race. The triathlon you've spent months preparing for. The swim you've had circled on your calendar all season.
There is something reassuring about knowing your equipment won't let you down. When you put on a brand-new pair of goggles, the water looks clearer. The fit feels better. Your confidence rises.
And confidence matters.
As swimmers, we spend countless hours preparing for moments that often last only minutes. We obsess over technique, training, nutrition, pacing, and recovery because details matter. The gear we trust becomes part of that preparation.
It's not really about goggles
But the more I thought about Hayden's comment, the more I realized that freshies aren't really about goggles. They're about confidence. They're about trust.
When swimmers talk about freshies, they're talking about the feeling that nothing is going to get in the way of their swim.
No leaking. No fogging. No distractions.
Just swimming.

At THEMAGIC5, that idea resonates deeply with me. Because our mission has never been simply to make goggles. Our mission is to eliminate distractions and help swimmers perform at their best.
The best goggles aren't the ones you're constantly adjusting. They're the ones you forget you're wearing.
Maybe that's why the idea of freshies is so powerful. It captures a feeling every swimmer understands instantly. The excitement before a race. The confidence that comes from preparation. The belief that today might be your best swim yet.
What do freshies mean to you?
So now I'm curious. What do freshies mean to you?
Is it the first swim in a brand-new pair of goggles? The race-day pair you've been saving for months? Or simply that feeling of confidence when everything is ready and you're prepared to perform?
Whatever your answer, one thing is certain.
Every swimmer remembers their freshies. And every swimmer is chasing that feeling.
