Our Athlete Miki Taagholt put the Hammer-Down at Oceanside 70.3 - The First Big Test For The Elite

This weekend our athlete, Miki Taagholt kicked off the 2019 season with a strong showing at the Ironman 70.3 Oceanside, though it wasn't quite enough to step onto the podium which was topped by strong Ben Kanute.

Ironman Oceanside 70.3 was a major experience. Racing against the big-guns within the sport – and particularly the middle distance (70.3) was awesome!. I got to admit that I was a little star-struck standing next to guys like Ben Kanute (who ended up winning the race), Rudy Van Berg, Sam Appleton, etc.

The start was amazing, 6.40 local time, just in time for the amazing sunrise in California. The swimming route was great and exciting, right into the big waves of the open ocean. Unfortunately for my start, I was a bit disorientated in the early beginning giving me some extra meters to catch up and ultimately making it impossible to stay with the leading guys – though I did exit the water around 5th so not totally off.

The race was mixed-feeling overall, going from 5th out of the swim gaining ground to a 4th until the last half of the run I do feel a bit disappointed ending up on an 8th. My main purpose of the race was to compare myself to the heavy guys and in a very strong field, I can’t be too disappointed with the 8th, especially considering that I feet that I was underperforming most of the day so in that perspective I’m confident that on a good day I will be up there where it really matters.
